Weekend in San Jose

November 23rd, 2011

We spent last weekend in San Jose – taking a little break from hustling in Coco. Here are some pictures of our trip.

Many locals come to the park to play sports, relax, walk their dogs, and spend some time with their friends and family.

Pearl Jam was in town over the weekend, and the preparations were well underway!

New coffee shop in Playas del Coco: Cafe Java

November 22nd, 2011

There is a new coffee shop that has just opened in Playas del Coco: Cafe Java. They are open from 7AM to 7PM daily, and they offer specialty coffee drinks, fantastic smoothies, and a variety of baked goods. A sandwich and salad menu is in the works in preparation for high season. Check out some of our pictures to get an idea. Chunky Monkey is a delight!

Fishing and Playa Prieta

November 15th, 2011

Over the weekend we went fishing, but unfortunately, we ended up leaving late in the morning, and therefore weren’t lucky enough to actually catch any fish.

We therefore decided to continue onwards to Playa Prieta – a white-sand beach located past the Four Seasons complex when leaving from Playas del Coco.

If you are planning to book any sea excursions during your stay in Coco, you will most likely visit this beach, since many of the tour operators doc here for beach breaks.

Playa Prieta has a beautiful cave, allowing you to swim in its shade. The current is relatively strong in this part though, so you have to be careful going in.

If you are looking for activities to do, you can go snorkeling at the nearby rocks or go for a short hike up the hill to take some sun while you observe the water from above.

When we were having lunch, a pisote came to visit our picnic, and even managed to steal one of our bags of chips.

Even though the day was somewhat cloudy, we were lucky enough to witness a spectacular sunset on the way back home!

Playas del Coco’s new boardwalk

November 10th, 2011

One of the major developments in Playas del Coco this year is the brand-new Amor de Temporada boardwalk.

There are now volleyball and basketball courts on the beach for all to enjoy.

Come play a game with your friends or with the local team!

The end of the green season in Playas del Coco

November 8th, 2011

If you are arriving to Playas del Coco shortly, you will still catch the area’s lush greenery and vibrant colors before the scorching heat of summer turns everything to its usual dusty color of sand.

Those of you who are returning to Coco for another high season will notice (and perhaps appreciate),  a couple of new developments that have appeared since your last visit:

- Coco now boasts a brand new boardwalk, that allows you to walk between Las Palmas (finished part now goes to the first entrance to the beach) and the main street much faster than it would normally take you to walk on the road.

- There will be a new steakhouse opening soon, and we are looking forward to reviewing it.

- Golf carts will be easier to rent this winter.  We will have a price list and contact info up on the website shortly.

- A new sunset bar, Tortuga, is now open at Claudio y Gloria.

- There are buses leaving from Coco to Liberia every hour now.

- Coco Bay estates offer Yoga classes for all on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for $5 per class.

- Yerbabuena now plays at BeachBums (almost every Friday) and at the Pacifico Beach Club on Saturdays.

- Adobe has closed their office, so there are no more car rental companies operating directly from Coco.

- If you are interested in getting a cell phone, you can now purchase a prepaid card if you have an unlocked phone, or get a local phone with the prepaid card.

- The casino has been renovated, and there is now a new Casino has been renovated and there is now a new sports bar called  Sloppy Pelican.

- Pacifico continues to welcome you  for happy hour (with 2 for 1 specials on drinks) every Friday and Saturday from 5PM to 7PM.

We will keep you updated on all the details in our subsequent posts!

However short or long, we wish you a great stay in Costa Rica! If Playas del Coco will be your home for the next while, let us know what you liked and disliked the most about your stay – we are always happy to get feedback ‘from the field’. Pura Vida!

An Afternoon at Playa Hermosa

January 17th, 2011

What is a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon? After a busy week in Playas del Coco, we had decided to get away to Playa Hermosa. Our ATV turned out to be a very appropriate choice of transportation as it really allowed us to see the beauty of Hermosa – luxurious villas and houses hidden behind luscious flower gardens; newly-built apartment complexes and old houses for sale.

Bosque del Mar – our discovery of this winter – is a great addition to Playa Hermosa. You can use the hotel’s lounge chairs on the beach (you simple have to order something), and the hotel’s restaurant has a varied menu that is reasonably priced. We had the Costa Rican version of the fish-and-chips: crispy french fries and Mahi-Mahi a la plancha. A delicious way to spend a Sunday!
